2026 limits
For 2026 you can contribute up to $24,500 to a 401(k). Workers 50 and older can add an $8,000 catch-up, and those aged 60 to 63 can add $11,250 instead. Employer contributions do not count toward your $24,500 limit.
Always get the match
A common match is 50% of what you put in, up to 6% of your pay. Not contributing at least 6% leaves free money on the table.
Example
A 30-year-old earning $75,000 with 3% raises, saving 8% with a 50% match up to 6%, a $20,000 starting balance and 7% returns, could have about $1.8 million at 65 (in future dollars).
Frequently asked questions
Traditional or Roth 401(k)?
Traditional lowers your taxes now; Roth contributions are taxed now but withdrawals in retirement are tax-free. Many people split between both.
