Hours Calculator

By the CalcMundi team · Updated October 22, 2026 · Formulas checked against standard financial math

Count the hours and minutes between a start and an end time, subtract your break and calculate your pay.

How to use it

Enter the start and end times, the length of your unpaid break and, optionally, your hourly rate. Shifts that pass midnight are handled automatically.

Example

From 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 60-minute break is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 8.5 decimal hours. At $20 an hour, that is $170.

Decimal hours

Payroll often uses decimal hours: divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes = 0.25, 30 minutes = 0.5, 45 minutes = 0.75.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work for night shifts?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift ended the next day.
